11 Things I Like To Do Which Don't Involve A Screen

In todays world it's hard to escape the screen, whether it's on our phone, laptop or tv screens there is always a screen staring back at us. Honestly I can't go an hour without checking my phone unless I've found something good to distract me from it. Picking up our phones or watching tv has became our second nature but sometimes we need to disconnect from it and give our minds a break.

1. Painting
I've been a lover of art my whole life but only in the past year I found an overwhelming love for watercolour painting. I love how you don't have full control over the paint and you never know exactly how it'll turn out. Let's not forget the beautiful texture and effects the dried paint leaves.

I find painting really relaxing, I almost sort of just doodle with paint, I rarely set out to paint a specific picture; I mostly let my paint brush decide.

2. Reading
There's nothing I enjoy more than being curled up in bed with a hot mug of tea, a knitted blanket and a book in hand, especially now it's almost winter! There's just something so rewarding about picking up an actual book and reading it but I have no idea what it is.

3. Going for a walk
I never do this but when I do I always wonder why I haven't been on a long, relaxing stroll sooner. It helps to clear my mind and process all the things that are going on with my life. It's the perfect time to reflect on change and think about what steps I need to take next.

4. Organising
Whether it's cleaning out my whole desk space or writing lists for everything you can imagine, I absolutely love being organised. My girlfriend however is the complete opposite and it really pulls on my strings. Being organised makes my life happier, easier and less stressful.

5. Having a good old conversation
Forget Facebook and text messaging, invite your friend round, put the kettle on and spend some genuine time with them without your phone in hand. You'll be surprised how much you'll be able to talk about without any distractions and I guarantee your friendship will thank you for it.

6. DIY
There's always an old piece of furniture that could use a lick of paint or something you can make with a hot glue gun, paper or string. Have a go at making some cute DIY room decor or try making your own version of that plant pot you've seen all over Instagram. DIY is a big stress buster and you can usually make things with stuff that's lying around the house.

7. Taking a hot bath
I take a long bath almost everyday, it helps me recharge my batteries and clear my mind. Now's the time to use that lush bath bomb you've been saving, light some candles around your bathroom and slip into some silky smooth waters and wash your worries away.

8. Shopping
Let's be honest, we don't need to be glaring at our phones when we go out shopping, do we? Take a mate or a loved one and treat yourself to something nice. Internet shopping has taken the world by storm but you can't beat a bit of good old browsing in an actual shop.

9. Writing
I have a travellers notebook which goes everywhere with me, it's filled with notes, lists and blog posts to write and it's also the best place to jot down drafts and ideas. I'm always, always writing something; if it's not in my notebook it'll be on my blog!

10. Baking
Whether it's an old fashioned victoria sponge or chunky chocolate chip cookies; I just love baking! I have to be in the mood for it though because sometimes I can find it quite stressful unless my mood is right and everything is all ready and planned out.

11. Cleaning
Cleaning and organising come hand in hand for me. I can't clean my room and not organise my entire shelving units and drawers; It's not gonna happen. I just love that relaxed, proud feeling you get when you look at a spotless room and everything is in it's own little place.

There's so many things I enjoy doing which don't involve me staring at a screen but I thought I'd just share my first few favourites. You might not find cleaning enjoyable which I can completely understand, usually people don't!

What do you like to do in your spare time that doesn't include a screen?

  4. I definitely agree with a lot of these - cleaning, organising, reading, long hot baths. I also find colouring in (as cliche as it might be now that adult colouring has gone mainstream!) a really fun, relaxing thing to do away from the screen. x www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x
